“Only one of the four species of trout stocked regularly by the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife (NJDFW) each year is native to New Jersey. The eastern brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) is native to northeastern North America and being so, was designated in 1992 as the State Fish of New Jersey.

A colorful species (olive to black and gray shading peppered with bright red spots surrounding by blue halos), it can be distinguished from other trout species by its "wormlike" pattern on the upper sides and dorsal (upper back) fin and caudal (posterior) fin.

Brook trout are never found naturally in areas where development is seen. Wild populations of brook trout in New Jersey are found mostly in mountainous areas. This is because they prefer a clean environment and freshwater that is clear, cold and highly oxygenated. The species cannot survive in polluted conditions or extremely turbid water. The presence of this fish is typically viewed as an indication of exceptional water quality.”
